Noblegen Generator Ensures Reliable Engine Maintenance Process in St. Lucia

St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) has acquired a Noblegen generator that effectively supports their engine overhaul with cryogenic cooling.

St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) has taken a major step toward operational reliability with the installation of a Noblegen Callisto liquid nitrogen (LN₂) generator.

The strategic investment streamlines critical engine maintenance processes, ensuring a more reliable liquid nitrogen supply for efficient servicing. By enabling on-site generation, LUCELEC is set to enhance supply reliability to its over 70,000 customers across Saint Lucia.

The role of liquid nitrogen in the engine overhaul process

Shrink fitting is a precise assembly technique commonly used in the replacement of high-stress engine parts. Cooling the parts to cryogenic temperatures with liquid nitrogen ensures uniform shrinkage and minimal risk of surface deformations — ideal for precision engine components.

Lincoln Francis, a LUCELEC Trainee Engineer in the Generation Department, described the importance of the engine overhaul process:

“When the engine has operated for 20,000 hours, we do a major overhaul or servicing of the engine where we shut it down and according to the manufacturer’s specifications, there are certain parts that need to change because they’ve run their course, run their life.

Our engine parts are designed by the manufacturer in such a way that during an overhaul they need to be cooled so that they shrink and in this smaller form can be replaced safely in the engine.”

Cost-effective, local supply

Previously, LUCELEC procured liquid nitrogen from Martinique two to three times per year through a costly process that relied heavily on supplier availability and left them vulnerable to price fluctuations and boil-off losses during transportation.

With the introduction of on-site generation, LUCELEC now benefits from a more reliable and readily available supply at the point of use, eliminating boil-off losses associated with shipping and decanting. The Callisto generator ensures constant availability, supported by an internal 100L insulated tank that maintains an effective reserve. By capturing and reliquefying boil-off gas, the system further enhances efficiency and minimises waste.

By moving away from external deliveries, LUCELEC has not only secured a more dependable supply but also reduced carbon emissions associated with transport, supporting a more sustainable way of operating.

This move underscores LUCELEC’s commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
